Does The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) have the McDonald's corporation confused with its mascot?
The nutrition group has reported that it intends to sue the fast food chain unless it stops offering toys with Happy Meals.
“McDonald’s is the stranger in the playground handing out candy to children,” said the organization's litigation director, Stephen Gardner, calling Happy Meal toys "creepy" and "predatory."
I would argue that Ronald McDonald himself is far more "creepy" and "predatory" than the Happy Meal Shrek donkeys. (Couldn't you just see Ronald as the shady stranger in the playground, with his perpetually open lap?)
CSPI apparently thinks that McDonald's offering of Happy Meal toys (which they say lures children into developing bad eating habits) equates to Joe Camel luring adolescents into develop smoking habits. We think it's a stretch — I remember occasional rushed McDonald's dinners as a kid rather fondly (though Super Size Me wasn't out when my parents were raising their first born) and I can definitely point you to a toy chest full of vintage Happy Meal toys at my mom's house.
Tell us — do you agree that McDonald's targets kids? Or is this a little overblown?
