It's not real, but it's close
Oh, what a sight! Shuttle replica makes its way to Johnson Space Center
Houston lost out on obtaining a space shuttle, but the replica looks pretty darn good.
The shuttle mockup, which was known as "Explorer" for the 18 years it was at NASA's Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida, made its way into Houston's Clear Lake Friday as crowds picked vantage points to watch it go by. CultureMapper Chris Swanson sent in this glorious photo that was taken at the curve of the Kemah Channel.
The replica left the Kennedy Space Center last week atop an open-air, flat-bed barge that traveled around the Florida peninsula through the Gulf of Mexico. It was towed across the gulf by a tug boat called Loss Sea and escorted by a Coast Guard cutter.
It crossed under the Highway 146 bridge at the Kemah Boardwalk and was scheduled to dock on Clear Lake at 3000 NASA Parkway near the Hilton hotel Friday afternoon. On Saturday it will be transported to Johnson Space Center.
