Dispel the dry spell
The Heights gets wet: Wine now available at First Saturday Arts Markets andWhite Linen Night
It's no small victory: The Heights can now sell wine at its many outdoor events.
Beginning Saturday at the First Saturday Arts Market (now with summer hours aimed at keeping cool from 6 to 10 p.m.), attendees can purchase wine by the glass or bottle from select Texas wineries.
How, you ask? Although individual stores and vendors in The Heights' dry area were allowed to give alcohol to customers — but not sell it — any organized event in the area was forbidden to mention it. (Tricky, no?) Lucky for us festival-goers, the TABC passed a law in 2009 allowing wineries to sell wine at festivals under a special permit.
So beginning Saturday and continuing for all the First Saturday Arts Markets AND White Linen Night, organizer Mitch Cohen secured The Heights' own Vintner's Own to dispel the dry spell and distribute Texas wines to those who like to sip while they stroll. Salud!
The First Saturday Arts Market this Saturday features Dutch-American artist Kim Kaiser, who just returned to Houston after spending three years in Kuala Lumpur. Her works were created in Malaysia and inspired by the flowers growing there in urban settings.
White Linen Night is August 6.
