Taking a swing at breast cancer: Houston's Susan G. Komen foundation uses golfto expand its reach
In an effort to expand its outreach into Montgomery County, the Houston chapter of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation held a golf tournament Saturday at Woodforest Golf Club called "Greens for Pink."
The first-annual event drew 100 golfers and raised more than $30,000 for breast cancer initiatives.
Organizer Jennifer Sims tells CultureMap: "For a first-time event, we're very pleased with the results. It was a fantastic event. There were 18 rounds of golf, a silent auction, a few great raffle items, a great buffet and all the feedback we've received has been fantastic."
Sims says Susan G. Komen Houston has been working hard over the past year to expand its reach into Montgomery County. Greens for Pink is just the one of the ideas that a new advisory council formed for that purpose has implemented.
Greens for Pink was the first major Susan G. Komen fundraiser in Montgomery County, which is an area with a lot of need, Sims says. "We're hoping to increase our presence there, along with awareness, education and funding."
