Art Car Parade 2011
New entries and old favorites at the 2011 Art Car Parade, but award for bestbras goes to Women Rock
The peddling youth selling Good Pop popsicles at Sunday's Art Car Parade must have made a fortune.
It was a sweltering day, but the oppressive heat didn't deter crowds from packing three and four-deep along Allen Parkway to watch one of Houston's quirkiest outdoor events.
The Alice and Wonderland car — and its on-theme costumed entourage — was a much-talked about favorite, and aside from classic old stalwarts like the Finn Jet and the car covered in singing bass and lobsters, some new entries were turning heads.
I took in the parade with a first-timer, and our mutual favorite was No. 127, a whimsical elephant-looking creature whose skin was made of old plastic grocery bags and whose eyes spun on repurposed bicycle tires.
And while I'm not a fan, on principle, of cars with something to sell, Balfour Beatty's propane-powered classic car-cum-construction vehicle was impressive.
But of all the tutu-ed parade participants and people on artful roller skates, points for most enthusiastic paraders goes to the Women Rock car, which was rededicated this year to breast cancer survivors, a gaggle of whom hooted and hollered from atop their van in brassieres that outdid even the wildest art car.
