Pop icon collecting for education
From Michael Jackson to Johnny Depp, Endeavor for Hope backers bid on starpower
An international beat came to a Houston mansion for The Endeavor for Hope Foundation fundraiser Saturday night. With Moodafaruka performing world fusion music, DJ Benzo and DeeJay Tunes spinning Afro-Tech, and Sushi Raku providing the catering, the diversity of the evening suited a city as multi-cultural as Houston.
Another highlight was a performance by Kuumba House — an African dance company. The Endeavor for Hope Foundation works to bring education to Sub-Saharan Africa, so while the high-energy performance was entertaining, it also connected the audience to what they were there to support.
Ada Echetebu Norris took the connection to the next level in a brief speech on her organization. She was born and raised in Nigeria and after trying many different career paths to change Africa, discovered that "change cannot happen without the ability to read and to write your own name." Norris then dedicated her life to the principles she believed in, founding The Endeavor for Hope Foundation.
One of the evening's highlights was a high-end auction of memorabilia. Items included a guitar signed by the Rolling Stones, a "Thriller" album signed by deceased icon Michael Jackson, a boxing glove signed by Muhammad Ali, an album signed by Madonna and even a signed photo of the often-reclusive, France-hidden Johnny Depp.
More than 230 guests filled the Memorial home of Melanie Johnson and spilled out onto the grounds on the nice Houston night. Mix 96.5's Ayana Mack emceed the evening and former NBA championship ring-collector "Big Shot Rob" Robert Horry was on hand to lend his support. Also spotted in the crowd: Kent Schaffer, Vika Filippov, Morgan Holleman, Fash Barvarz, Iñaki Orozco, Adora Galas, David Michael, Allan Rodewald, Christina Rubino, Henry Membreño, Christopher Tamigi, and Riyad Abu-Taha.
