$4 gas isn't bad for everybody
Renewed energy: OTC boasts biggest crowds in 30 years
If Houston's steakhouses and strip clubs seem oddly empty, that's because the annual Offshore Technology Conference has come to an end.
This year's OTC was the third-largest in the event's 43-year history, drawing 89,400 oil and gas industry workers, the highest attendance since 1982 and a 14 percent increase over the 2011 conference.
It was also the largest OTC by physical space, with 641,352 square feet of exhibition space due to the addition of an outdoor pavilion. Over 2,500 companies from 46 countries including Bahrain, Hungary, Israel, Lithuania, and New Zealand were represented, and the conference featured eight panel sessions, 29 executive keynote presentations at luncheons and breakfasts, and 300 technical papers.
"In terms of strength of the technical sessions and technology on display, OTC reached a record-breaking number of people and offered the most ways to connect, educate, and conduct business," said OTC chairman Steve Balint in a statement. "The industry is on the rise and challenges are ahead, making it more important than ever to collaborate and share best practices with colleagues all over the world. OTC is the place to do that."
If recent OTC events have been (relatively) subdued, this year certainly seemed to have an optimistic bent, with the announcement of a new OTC Brazil in partnership with IBP, the Brazilian Petroleum, Gas, and Biofuels Institute, set to debut October 2013 in Rio de Janeiro.
