Making healthier communities: New clinic hopes to lure doctors to Houston's medical desert
In Fort Bend-Houston Super Neighborhood No. 41, a new health clinic that offers low-cost medical care is taking shape on South Post Oak, where there are few private physicians' offices. Architect Igbal Nagji spared no detail, hoping to design a space that would attract top medical professionals.
Ibn Sina Foundation, the nonprofit leading the effort, has two existing clinics in the Houston area. The mission is to make local communities healthier. The facilities are for people who don't have access to health care, but do have some limited financial resources.
Within a three-mile radius of the new structure, there isn't a single physician.
Within a three-mile radius of the new structure, there isn't a single physician, noted Grady Prestage, Fort Bend Commissioner, Precinct 2, making it something of a medical desert in a city that knows plenty about food deserts. One whose Texas Medical Center is world renowned.
"You cannot create healthy communities without healthy citizens, " James Noteware, former director of the City of Houston Housing and Community Department, says. "We are pleased to provide $1.2 million in support through Community Development Block Grant funds and through the United States Department of Houston and Community Development."
The project is also funded by private individuals, organizations and foundations.
