Take it to the bank: Houston Food Bank expanding to become largest in U.S.
When it comes to providing for Houston's hungry and underprivileged, the Houston Food Bank already works with Swiss precision, feeding 137,000 people in 18 counties each week through over 400 charities, and handling 46 million pounds of food per year.
But this bank is about to get even bigger. The Houston Food Bank purchased the former Sysco Foods headquarters at 535 Portwall St., which, after an extensive renovation, will make the Houston Food Bank the largest in volume in the United States.
There will be a ceremonial announcement, at 10 a.m. Thursday, featuring Houston Food Bank CEO Brian Greene, Harris County Judge Ed Emmett, Texas Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst, Houston Community College Chancellor Dr. Mary Spangler, Houston Food Bank board chair (and President of H-E-B Houston) Scott McClelland and major capital donors Laura and John Arnold.
