A Pampering Peek
All roads lead to Rome: The classic spa reinvented
Somewhere around the inventions of Botox, chemical peels and pulsating cellulite treatments, spas became less about feeling beautiful and more about suffering in the name of beauty.
Rome Salon and Day Spa — which will bring a high-end spa to West Ave. in June — has a different idea: Treatments derived from the ancient Roman baths customized for individual needs using the latest organic products to create a natural, lasting radiance.
Though the 9,500-foot space is still in the process of being built out (Sparc Designs has planned a Mediterranean oasis of 12-foot columns, floor-to-ceiling draperies, and Venetian plaster detailing), Rome held a preview at West Ave. this week to explain the concept and philosophy.
"Instead of having a list of pre-made treatments to choose from which may or may not work for you, we sit down with each client and talk about what are your needs, what is your stress like, where are your pressure points, what are your skin issues," Rome executive director Zahira Coll says. "So instead of just picking one kind of treatment, we can design it especially for you. So if you were in for a massage — the Massagio di Roma — it might be a little Swedish, a little shiatsu, whatever is best for your specific profile, plus using the hot shells, which give a safer, more subtle and deeper heat than hot stones."
Partnering with exclusive brands like Kerstin Florian Caviar skincare, vegan SpaRitual manicure and pedicure products and organic, mineral-based makeup line La Bella Donna, the focus is on natural ingredients and products that have been used in beauty treatments for thousands of years — including a merlot hydrotherapy bath and BodyCoffee to detoxify skin.
"It's the perfect level of customization, " spa head Yazira Helsley says. "It's not walking in and making a random selection, and it's not me telling you what to do. It's a conversation to figure out what you like and what will work best for your skin. Even when I recommend products, it's not a list of what I used, it's designed to work with your lifestyle."
Hey, when it comes to indulgence, maybe it's best to do as the Romans do.
