But Surprise Guest Is Expected
Sarah Palin gig at "Celebration of Reading" hijacked by hacker trial
You can thank e-mail hacker David Kernell for getting in the way of Sarah Palin's much-anticipated role in tonight's Celebration of Reading at the Hobby Center.
His trial continues today in Knoxviille, Tenn., where Kernell faces felony charges for hacking into Palin's e-mail account. The former Alaska governor and author, who was lined up to read from her book Going Rogue at the Barbara Bush literacy event, has been subpoenaed to testify.
Palin was to be the headliner of the annual literacy fundraiser. Celebration of Reading officials got word only Wednesday of this glitch in the programming. It's a major disappointment to Palin fans, who were looking forward to a real-life glimpse of the charismatic politico.
Jean Becker, the former President's chief of staff, said this morning, "The Bushes are obviously disappointed but they certainly understand . . . and these are circumstances beyond her control." Becker added that this is not the first time that an author has had to cancel, though previous change-of-plans were all due to illness.
The show goes on tonight with four authors — Al Jacobs, Mary Karr, Greg Kincaid and Kathryn Stockett — giving readings from recent works. And there will be the traditional surprise guest finale that keeps Celebration of Reading regulars in high anticipation.
