Delayed Justice?
Shocking twist in Bellaire socialite case: Is the husband's mistress a wannabeserial killer?
Defense attorneys for Jeffrey Stern won a delay in his murder-for-hire trial on Tuesday as they investigate new information about Stern's mistress and alleged conspirator, Michelle Gaiser.
Stern, a Bellaire lawyer, is charged with orchestrating a murder-for-hire scheme to kill his wife Yvonne Stern that led to three separate shootings, including one that seriously injured Yvonne, the so-called Bellaire socialite. Gaiser confessed to hiring the hit men in exchange for a maximum 25-year sentence and her testimony that Stern was the mastermind behind the plot.
Prosecutors have uncovered allegations that Gaiser might have ordered a hit job on another woman before she tried to have Yvonne Stern killed.
But information about Gaiser turned over to the defense by the prosecution might shed doubt on Gaiser's credibility. According to the Houston Chroncle's Brian Rogers, prosecutors have uncovered allegations that Gaiser might have ordered a hit job on another woman before she tried to have Yvonne Stern killed and put bleach in another person's drink.
The 31 pieces of evidence released also allege that Gaiser may be an illegal immigrant and that she used an illegal passport and failed to pay income taxes.
State District Judge Denise Bradley determined in court that Stern's defense team can have more time to investigate the claims. The two-week trial, which was scheduled to begin this Friday, will be rescheduled for a later date on April 18.
The Stern case has garnered national attention not only because of the multiple attempts on Yvonne Stern's life, but also because the couple have reconciled after filing for divorce, and Yvonne Stern has become a vocal advocate of Jeffrey's innocence. She appeared on ABC's 20/20 Friday to do just that.
