Disturbing video shows astronaut Mark Kelly frantically trying to save sea lion from family dog
An unsettling YouTube video has emerged showing Mark Kelly caught in a violent struggle to release a baby sea lion from the grip of his family's bull dog in Southern California.
The astronaut and his wife, former Arizona representative Gabrielle Giffords, were vacationing with family in Orange County's Laguna Beach this past weekend when an American Bulldog mix belonging to Kelly's 18-year-old daughter locked its jaws on a beached and potentially sick sea lion. Giffords was not at the scene.
Kelly's daughter lost her grip on the dog's leash when it spotted the sea lion, which died shortly after the struggle.
The YouTube footage (watch above if you wish, it's disturbing) shows three women attempting to free the creature from the big dog, which refuses to let go and proceeds to shake the sea lion in its mouth.
Kelly appears after several minutes and successfully pulls the dog from the sea lion. After the incident, he reportedly brought the dog back to the house where the family was staying.
LAPD captain Jason Kravetz told the Los Angeles Times that Kelly's daughter, who lives in Houston, lost her grip on the dog's leash when it spotted the animal, which died shortly after the struggle. Leashed pets are permitted on the beach and the family was not fined.
One question remains, of course . . . What kind of person witnesses a situation like this, films it and then posts it on YouTube?
