Uncertain future
Updated: Beached whale rescued in Galveston, but can it be saved?
UPDATE: Sad news: The beached pygmy sperm whale was euthanized Wednesday night after marine mammal experts decided it was too sick to survive.
------------
No, it's neither a joke nor an innuendo. There was, quite literally, a beached whale in Galveston.
Crews of volunteers and rescue workers struggled to move the 12-foot sperm whale to a rehab facility run by the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network, where it's now being examined. The smaller-sized whale — adults can reach up to 60 feet — was found on the West side of Galveston Island near Jamaica Beach at around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.
This whale is small enough that it was first thought to be a baby whale, which put it in even more danger. If a baby whale's mother is not found, the animal has to be euthanized, because there is no way to take care of the animal, according to the Galveston County Daily News.
The Houston Chronicle reports that this whale has since been determined to actually be an adult pygmy sperm whale though.
Fingers and fins crossed for a successful rehab.
