Happy Birthday to Kelly
Gabrielle Giffords adds lip synching and walking to her recovery milestones
Days after she spoke her first words since being shot, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has begun walking and lip-syncing the words to songs.
According to The New York Times, Giffords mouthed the words to "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" and the jazz standard "I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Baby" as friends and family sang along. Giffords was also videotaped mouthing the words to "Happy Birthday" as a surprise for her husband Mark Kelly's upcoming birthday.
Since being shot in the head in Tucson on Jan. 8, Giffords' rate of recovery has surpassed all expectations. She began a course of rehab at Houston's TIRR Memorial Hermann on Jan. 21.
Kelly, a Houston-based shuttle commander, reports that he is able to have conversations with his wife, with her understanding and giving brief responses. Giffords also spoke to Kelly's twin brother on Sunday in a call from the International Space Station.
“We tell her everything that’s going on,” Giffords' chief of staff Gia Carusone told The New York Times. “Don’t get the idea she’s speaking in paragraphs, but she definitely understands what we’re saying and she’s verbalizing.”
Giffords' mother says she is also walking in the hallways with a shopping cart and doing other physical exercise to strengthen her muscles.
