Road to Recovery
Gabrielle Giffords wants toast: The breakthrough that has Mark Kelly Facebookelated
Gabrielle Giffords has spoken for the first time since she suffered a gunshot wound to the head Jan. 8, and her latest request was simple: She wanted some toast with her breakfast.
Giffords made the request after speaking her first words, confirmed Giffords' chief of staff, Pia Carusone, in an e-mail to MSNBC Wednesday. And her progress, which has so far been rapid, has not plateaued. In fact, reports out of The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research (TIRR) in the Medical Center, where Giffords is recovering, say the Congresswoman has been speaking more and more. Doctors are even hopeful that she will be able to attend her husband's space shuttle launch, from Cape Canaveral, Fla., on April 19.
Giffords' husband, Mark Kelly, is a Houston-based astronaut and will lead a two-week final mission for the space shuttle Endeavor.
Kelly posted about his elation at the speed of his wife's recovery on Facebook, writing "The doctors say she is recovering at lightning speed considering her injury but they aren't kidding when they say this is a marathon process. There are encouraging signs every day, though."
Giffords' office echoed this in a statement to CBS news, saying, "The reports of Congresswoman Giffords improving in ALL areas are true. She has a daily rigorous therapy schedule that includes a lot of work on her speech capacity. She is working really hard and its paying off."
Kelly has been making periodic updates to Gifford's Facebook fan page, and added in the same update that Giffords is eating three meals a day, "even though it's hospital food."
