Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia sings for his supper at swearing-in ceremony
Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia was sworn in for a second term during a colorful ceremony at the Hobby Center on Sunday that included a performance by a gospel choir, an appearance by the Harris County Sheriff's Department Honor Guard and a speech by Harris County Judge Ed Emmett.
Emmett highlighted famous sheriffs throughout history, including Inspector Javert from Les Miserables, and, noted that, before a recent showing of the movie that he and his wife attended, Garcia appeared onscreen in a public service announcement about not texting while driving.
Making the connection between the two on-screen law enforcement officials, Emmett urged Garcia to at least sing part of his speech.
The sheriff complied by singing the words "Judge Emmett," before giving the rest of his speech in the traditional way.
Our spies at the ceremony say that those on the wrong side of the law should be wary of Garcia — he was convincingly elected for a second term — but American Idol contestants don't have anything to fear.
