armored truck attack
Film buffs take cover as afternoon shootout at popular theater leaves one deadand another wounded
Known for its film previews and special screenings throughout the year, the AMC 30 was the scene of a deadly afternoon shoot-out this weekend when a brazen gunman attempted to rob an armored vehicle in broad daylight.
According to the Houston Police Department, two officers with the Garda security company — a man and a woman — were making a routine cash pickup at the popular multiplex on Dunvale near Westheimer around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
“They were telling everybody to get away from the glass because there were some gun shots outside,” recalled moviegoer Larry Smith.
Upon returning from the theater with the money, the woman courier was shot in the hip by a male suspect hiding along the side of the vehicle. The second guard, who was stationed inside the truck, quickly returned fire, exchanging at least a dozen bullets with the robber.
The unidentified gunman was struck in the chest and rushed to Ben Taub Hospital, where he later died of his injuries. The injured courier was taken to an area hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
After the incident, KHOU Ch. 11 spoke with moviegoer Larry Smith, who witnessed the fire fight from the theater lobby.
“They were telling everybody to get away from the glass because there were some gun shots outside,” he said. “And then they all dispersed. And we all went in different directions and got away from it all.”
Houston police are searching for a possible second suspect in a getaway car, according to the Houston Chronicle.
