Stages whisks Houston audiences to Miami for 'Laughs in Spanish'
Picture this: Art Basel is about to begin and Mariana, director of a swanky modern gallery, has a big problem on her hands. Her showroom is an active crime scene.
When Mariana’s movie-star mother tries to save the show, everything gets hilariously complicado. This fast-paced, cafecito-infused comedy about art and success — and mothers and daughters — is a joyous snapshot of Cuban and Colombian-American culture set in the heart of Miami’s Wynwood Arts District.
That's the premise for Laughs in Spanish, a new play by Alexis Scheer that's currently running at Stages on the Sterling Stage.
Directed by Rebecca Rivas and co-produced with TheatreSquared, the play is performed primarily in English with small portions in Spanish. Expect LOLs with a few Jajajas thrown into the mix.
"The writing in Laughs in Spanish is bracing, funny, poignant, and fresh," says Stages artistic director Kenn McLaughlin. "It draws deeply from Alexis’ own lived experiences as an artist and as a child. Her parents are Jewish and Columbian, and they ran a small button shop in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood; the art studio in the play is Alexis' imagined, gentrified version of her parents' shop."
Laughs in Spanish is approximately 90 minutes with no intermission, and does contain adult language.
Showtimes are Wednesday-Thursday at 7 pm, Friday at 7:30 pm, Saturday at 2 pm and 7:30 pm, and Sunday at 2 pm.
The play is onstage now through March 17, 2024, and you can purchase tickets here.
