Shelby's Social Diary
Joyous notes and a glorious celebration herald a rich start to the HoustonSymphony season
The Houston Symphony's "Ode to Joy" season-opening concert in Jones Hall and dinner that followed at The Corinthian provided the perfect musical antidote to any eve of 9/11 sorrows. Saturday night's concert with the powerful Houston Symphony Chorus could not have been more uplifting. It was a celebration of the spirit that carried guests on a wave of musical enthusiasm to the post-concert dinner.
In fact, the black-tie attired crowd was so enthused that few wanted to be seated for the pre-plated dinner that awaited in the colorfully-festooned party space. Socializing in this gathering of notables was clearly tops on the evening's menu.
Dinner chairs Kathi and Bill Rovere welcomed the flow of guests while evening honorees Helen and Jim Shaffer, recognized for their long-time dedication to the symphony, received beaucoup congratulations. The Methodist Hopsital System was recognized as Community Partner Honoree. A celebration was surely in order for the Roveres. Their efforts led the symphony society to reaching its goal of $300,000.
Music director Hans Graf (walking a bit stiff-legged after knee surgery this summer) and wife Rita were surrounded by fans who had not seen the peripatetic couple since last spring. Kudos ran high for the stellar concert of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Beaming on this evening was symphony executive director and CEO Mark Hanson accompanied by his wife Christina.
Key players in the symphony leadership included M.S. Stude, Houston Symphony Society chairman emeritus, and Jesse Tutor, society board chair, accompanied by his wife Betty.
Among those in the glamorous opening night crowd were Nancy and Bob Peiser, Margaret Williams and Jim Daniel, Barbara and Ulyesse LeGrange, Tara and David Wuthrich, April and Tom Lykos, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and Tricia Dewhurst, Joann and Bill Crassas and Mary Ann and David McKeithan.
