Discovery Green stage rocks with free concerts for mega museum conference
Beyond the ticketed entertainment events for those attending the American Association of Museums conference this week, the Houston Arts Alliance is providing two days worth of free concerts for the 5,000 out-of-towners and for the pubic at large.
Monday at noon, Houston Grand Opera presents Song of Houston on stage at Discovery Green. That lyrical presentation gives way at 1 p.m. to the blues sounds of legend Texas Johnny Brown.
While many of the conference attendees are gearing up for a blowout at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and Contemporary Arts Museum Houston Monday night, those without tickets to that event can rock out with Miss Leslie and Her Juke-Jointers for an hour of Texas honky tonk beginning at 6 p.m. The music switches to gospel at 7 p.m. when Endurance takes the Discovery Green stage along with Garifuna musicians, making this a global gospel extravaganza.
On Tuesday, the internationally-flavored entertainment continues at Discovery Green at noon with Rajarajeshwari Bhat, an internationally acclaimed performer of the Carnatic tradition. It's another form of performance at 1 p.m. when the group Umbrella Man takes the stage featuring the talents of homegrown musicians who combine zydeco, conjunto and hard-core country for a uniquely Gulf Coast sound.
Mariachi Imperial fires up the musical action at 6 p.m. on Tuesday with three generations of musicians performing a classic repertoire. They are followed by the Hustlers Brass Band, a load of talent blown into Houston from New Orleans on the winds of Katrina.
The concerts are part of the Houston Arts Alliance's Folklife & Traditional Arts Program "Local Roots/Global Culture Showcase."
