A new bar with major music cred is opening by The Menil: Want to drink to Free Press?
Like Free Press Houston's signature smart snark and the stiff drinks and good tunes at Fitzgerald's? Then you're in luck: Omar Afra (editor/publisher of the monthly paper) and Jagatjit "Jagi" Katial (owner of concert promoter Pegstar), the pair behind the highly-anticipated Free Press Summer Fest and the indie music venue, are opening a bar in Montrose.
A TABC application was posted on April 20 at the former Sophia space (and before that, the home of longtime neighborhood fixture Café Artiste) at Mandell and West Main, just a block south of the Menil Collection. (Eater's Eric Sandler first reported the filing).
The applicant name — "Faustian Bargain" — gives little clue for what's in store, but the Free Press Summer Fest sticker tacked to the window might. According to CorporationWiki, the LLC is a joint operation between Afra, Katial and John So.
The guys aren't talking yet, but we'll keep an eye on the joint for further developments.
