For Film Buffs
Free movie alert! Houston to be overrun with free flicks — in coffee shops and parks
The Houston Cinema Arts Society has some good news for film lovers. Starting this month, HCAS will launch a year-round series of film showings around the Houston area as it gears up for the festival in November. The programming includes a Artist Choice Film Series at Brasil, films at the Miller Outdoor Theatre and movies at Discovery Green.
HCAS is set to host seven films a year for the Artist Choice Film Series at Brasil, where Houston visual, performing and literary artists will select a feature film of their choice, followed by a moderated discussion with the audience (and it's all free). One of the three confirmed showings is Houston photographer Geoff Winningham with Eadweard Muybridge Zoopraxographer on April 20 at 8 p.m. Alley Theatre artistic director Gregory Boyd will also showcase Theatre of Blood on June 16 at 8:30 p.m. and Mydolls musician Trish Herrera plans to unviel Quadrophenia on Aug. 17 at 8:30 p.m.
In addition to the Artist Choice series, HCAS and the Houston Ballet will present a complimentary viewing of Sons de L'âme (Sounds of the Soul) at the Miller Outdoor Theatre on May 8. The movie was filmed in Paris and choreographed by the Houston Ballet artistic director Stanton Welch. It first appeared at the Cinema Arts Festival in 2014, but is being shown again due to weather issues that prevented many from attending that showing.
The 5th annual Julydoscope at Discovery Green — a free evening of live dance performances and a soon-to-be announced film — is also already on the schedule. Stay tuned for more.
