In a night of stellar entertainment, Houston Ballet steals the show at Pink atthe Brown
Applause, applause for the talented participants in the Pink at the Brown performing arts extravaganza at Wortham Theater Center. For more than 90 minutes, they wooed a willing audience – including former President George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush — with song and dance and dramatic readings, all for the benefit of the Pink Ribbons Project.
Since 1998 the breast cancer awareness non-profit has been orchestrating the biennial fundraiser that brings together talent from across the city. Taking the spotlight at various times on stage in the Brown Theater were talents from Houston Grand Opera, Da Camera of Houston, the Society for the Performing Arts, Houston Boychoir, Houston Girls Chorus and Gexa Energy Broadway at the Hobby Center. Readings by the Alley Theatre's Annalee Jefferies were interspersed between the various presentations.
Highlight of the presentations were compliments of Houston Ballet, which contributed two beautiful, classical pieces — excerpts from Sleeping Beauty and from Raymonda — that were alone worth the price of admission.
The evening was chaired by Jana Arnoldy and Phoebe Tudor with Shelly Power serving as artistic chair. Honorees Randalls Food Markets, Dr. Ana Maria Gonzalez-Angulo and Lourdes Hernandez were recognized in a program that coincided with the underwriter dinner that preceded the performance. A champagne and dessert reception for all ticket-holders followed in the theater center's Grand Foyer.
A special treat for key players in the evening was the photo op with the Bushes. Among those filing into the Green Room to greet the former president and first lady were Pink Ribbons Project principals Jane Weiner and Susan Rafte and executive director Loubel Cruz. Add Jana and Scotty Arnoldy, Phoebe and Bobby Tudor and the president's grandson Pierce Bush.
