Winter Street Studios will celebrate the 10 Year Anniversary of opening its doors in the First Ward as the first large-scale working artists' studio building in Houston. The building became a catalyst for launching the area as a studio hub that has now become the largest concentration of working artists' studios in the state.
To commemorate the occasion, developer Jon Deal and Winter Street have published a retrospective catalog, The Originals, which chronicles the start-up of the project and the 19 artists who pioneered the building and remain current tenants. Renowned Houston artists Sandi Seltzer Bryant and Nicola Parente, both original tenants, compiled the catalog. Bryant, who met Deal in the early stages of developing Winter Street, is credited with introducing him to the Houston art scene and helping him find artist tenants and make the project a reality.
The originals will be honored with a book signing, gallery exhibition and reception from 6-9 p.m. in the Winter Street Gallery. The public is invited to join Jon Deal, Winter Street artists and many luminaries from the Houston art community in celebrating the building and the artists that helped pave the way for Houston to become the Art City that it is today.
