WindSync’s A Trip to the Moon is a music and film concert experience that celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing with three musical pieces focusing on the history of space exploration – both imagined and accomplished.

Houston’s wind quintet will create a live soundtrack to Georges Mèliés 1902 silent film, A Trip to the Moon, known for its breakthrough special effects and storytelling, using music from the 1875 operetta of the same title by Jacques Offenbach.

Written by Mark Mellits and commissioned especially for the anniversary of the moon landing, Apollo is characterized by driving rhythms and styles that arose in the 1960’s – minimalism and funk. The piece will be accompanied by film footage from the Apollo 11 lunar mission, courtesy of the Lunar and Planetary Institute.

In Voyager Golden Record Suite, WindSync will celebrate NASA and the relationship between Earth and space by performing music included on the Voyager Golden Records, curated by a committee led by astrophysicist Carl Sagan. The quintet’s musical selections will be interspersed with audio recordings of folk music, speech, and natural events, and accompanied by projections of images from Earth.
