Voices Breaking Boundaries will transform two neighboring Near Northside homes for a Borderlines Production that explores how ritual commemorations — shrines, altars, retablos, temples, performances and gestures — mediate history and memory along two border regions: U.S.-Mexico and India-Pakistan-Bangladesh.
The afternoon will include a wide array of art including installations, videos, music and performances, as well as original prints from the Asaro Collective, which will be available for purchase. In keeping with the spirit of the event, VBB encourages audience members to dress in a way reminiscent of a significant celebrated ritual.
This production is co-curated by Robert Pruitt and Sehba Sarwar, with support from Rob Block, Jimmy Castillo, Autumn Knight, Raul Ramos, Harbeer Sandhu and Monica Villarreal.
Local and international artists featured include The Asaro Collective, Britto Arts Trust, Chhobir Haat, Erika Harrsch, Abijan Johnson, Minerva Laveaga, Naila Mahmood, Sadya Mizan, Punjabi Cultural Society, Tentative Collective, M'Kina Tapscott, Vasl Artists' Collective and more.
The event will take place in the homes of Frank Aguilar and Arlene and Mario Zamora. Park across the street at the Leonel Castillo Community Center.
