Chicago-based artist Theaster Gates combines strategies of urban planning, object making and performance. Founder of the nonprofit Rebuild Foundation, Gates is a professor and the director of Arts and Public Life at the University of Chicago. The Black Monks of Mississippi, an experimental musical ensemble organized by Gates, brings together Eastern ideals of melodic restraint with the spirit of gospel music and the deeply rooted American tradition of the Blues.
