The annual series “Jazz on Film,” organized by guest curator Peter Lucas, celebrates the intersections of jazz and cinema. This year’s program brings three weekends of screenings that include memorable jazz scores, rare classics, a new documentary, and other films that illuminate fascinating figures in the world of jazz.

- June 9: Max Roach: The Drum Also Waltzes - This new documentary is a profound and expansive portrait of legendary jazz drummer, composer, bandleader, and activist Max Roach.
- June 10: The Cool World - This landmark independent film directed by Shirley Clarke reflects the harsh realities of Harlem street life through the story of 15-year-old Duke and his gang.
- June 16: A Man Called Adam - This sharp-edged allegory stars Sammy Davis Jr. as a mercurial jazz musician who struggles with racial prejudice, a troubling past, and alcoholism.
- June 17: Imagine the Sound - This unique portrait of some of creative music’s greatest protagonists has been hailed as “the best documentary on free jazz.”
- June 23: Texas Tenor: The Illinois Jacquet Story - Born in Louisiana and raised in Houston, saxophonist Illinois Jacquet first came to prominence when his solo on Lionel Hampton’s 1942 recording of “Flying Home” innovated the sound of jazz tenor and ushered in rhythm and blues.
