Texas Filmmakers Series Screening: The Pleasures of this Stately Dome

eventdetail

The Pleasures of this Stately Dome is a 16mm documentary film that was shot in 1975-76 as a tribute to the first 10 years of the Astrodome. The film includes archival footage of Judge Roy Hofheinz selling the idea of the first domed stadium to the Harris County Commissioners Court, groundbreaking for construction with "six-shooter pistols," construction of the dome itself and opening night celebrations.

Geoff Winningham directed the film and was the principal cameraman. Jack York handled the sound and assisted in the editing. Their original color footage includes numerous Astrodome thrill shows, Oilers football, Astros baseball, political rallies, religious gatherings and the Houston Rodeo.

The film won the Documentary Prize in the 1976 Edinburgh Film Festival.

A talk-back with director Geoff Winningham follows the screening. Guests will enjoy free beer donated by 8th Wonder.
