Psychic of Light is a joint effort from Taiwan Academy of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston and the local, well-known Taiwanese artist Charles Liu. This performance is a creative blend of technology, lighting, and music that conveys deep cultural codes of Taiwanese ethnic beliefs.
A beautiful representation of art and technology by Taiwan’s current leading artist, the talented team members include Venice Film Festival-Best VR Experience Recipient Huang, Hsin-Chien (leading producer and director), Tao, Ya-Lun, Lien, Chun-Chien, Tsau, Saiau-Yue, and Yang Cheng. TECO in Houston is honored to invite local artist Charles Liu as the curator for an exciting outdoor performance that is sure to delight.
Psychic of Light is one part theatrical drama, one part light show, and one part live music. Together, the variety of mediums reflects the multimedia-flood which defines life in the Digital Era. When life is influenced and shaped by Big Data, distinguishing between correct and false information can be difficult. Information and messages are compounded through either intentional or unintentional distortion of juxtapositions. Life is made more complex as we try to define what is in front of us; whether the surface we see is true.
The live music is an artificial blend of audio. The steady build of sounds, beats, and rhythms leads to surprising compositions. At the same time, the mapping technology projects visual elements onto the huge motor-enabled dynamic sculpture. A balloon symbolizes the human body which embraces desires as shown by the words while also reflecting the ironic emptiness of human life. The balloon represents the spiritual form of a wishing tree inside one’s mind and all wishes are put on display.
One could consider Psychic of Light the re-definition and re-interpretation of traditional culture through a new lens of virtual aesthetics and technological decoding. It opens new possibilities to define Taiwanese folk art and music of the past and present. Moreover, the outdoor performance invites viewers to enter the virtual world of spiritual tradition. The ritual and ceremonial experience through 3D projection-imaging will provide spatial splendor in an eye-opening experience.
