The St. John the Divine Chorale with the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra Ensemble offers the Houston premiere of St. John Passion by Bob Chilcott within the context of a Good Friday service.
Chilcott, composer and former member of the world-renowned ensemble The King's Singers, has composed a new work that brings new light and engagement to this sacrificial event. Chilcott's St. John Passion tells the story of Christ's final hours with narrative, meditations and hymns.
The choir also performs four meditations and five hymns that support the story. For the meditations, Chilcott has selected English poems from the 13th to the early 17th centuries. The hymns feature five well-known texts set to new, original melodies, which are also intended for performance by an audience or congregation.
