Back for the sixth year, now with a much shorter name (formerly called the Menil Community Arts Festival and Houston Indie Book Fest), MenilFest takes over the Menil Campus for a day of art and entertainment highlighting the diversity of the Menil neighborhood arts community.

The festival includes musical performances, spoken word, chakra tuning, literature and visual art, all taking place on the Menil Collection lawn and the Menil Bookstore deck, as well as the Rothko Chapel and Houston Center for Photography. Participating organizations include Da Camera of Houston, Inprint, Southwest Alternate Media Project (SWAMP), Writers in the Schools, Gulf Coast Journal and the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art.

Schedule highlights:

  • 11 a.m.-6 p.m. — Collaborations XI Print Sale presented by Houston Center for Photography
  • 11 a.m.-6 p.m. — Houston Indie Book Fest presented by Gulf Coast Journal
  • 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m. — Various readings and panels presented by Gulf Coast Journal
  • noon-1 p.m. — Young Writers Reading presented by Writers in the Schools
  • 1-3 p.m. — Lisa Harris Seven Doors Chakra tuning at the Rothko Chapel
  • 5-6 p.m. — Performance by Blues singer Annika Chambers presented by The Menil Collection
  • 6-8 p.m. — MenilFest after-party at Lowbrow featuring SWAMP movie screenings and artist meet & greet

Attendees are invited to see the current exhibitions from The Menil Collection and Houston Center for Photography, readings hosted by Inprint and Gulf Coast Journal, poetry buskers, and kids art activities on the Menil Bookstore deck hosted by the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art.

Snacks and refreshments will be available for sale from food trucks parked around the campus. Picnics are also welcomed and encouraged. The main parking lot at 1515 West Alabama is closed for renovation and landscaping. Expanded street parking is located alongside the museum, on Sul Ross, Mulberry, and Branard streets, as well as the Richmond Hall parking lot at 1500 Richmond Ave.
