Based on historical fact, Berlin 36 tells the story of German high-jumper Gretel Bergmann. Fearing humiliation should a Jew win the high jump, the Nazis pick Marie Ketteler as Gretel’s competitor on the German team. Unbeknownst to Gretel, Marie is a man, and Gretel is excluded from the competition under false pretenses, leaving the field clear for Marie.
