Science on Screen Film Series: Gattaca

eventdetail

Science on Screen pairs films with lively introductions and discussions by notable scientists. Gattaca is about a genetically inferior man, played by Ethan Hawke, who assumes the identity of a superior to pursue his lifelong dream of space travel. The cast includes Uma Thurman, Jude Law, Gore Vidal and Alan Arkin.

The discussion will be led by Steve Scherer, associate professor in the BCM Human Genome Sequencing Center. Scherer along with colleagues from the UI College of Engineering and Center for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, developed the OtoSCOPE method, which captures and sequences all the portions of a patient's DNA that coincide with areas of the human genome known to contain deafness mutations.
