Sawyer Yards presents "Amazon I," a new installation by artist Gladys Poorte.
Poorte’s work process has always included building elaborate models with a variety of materials: paper, board, wood, wire and recycled and found objects. Building these models is a way of three dimensional drawing which Poorte uses as reference for paintings, drawings and photographs. Lately the models have become installations that are exhibited alongside the other work.
“Amazon I” is an installation that was built out of Amazon boxes using deep ocean creatures as reference. These creatures are arranged in an imaginary deep ocean community together with seemingly man-made structures. The work addresses notions of consumerism and its impact on climate change and the environment.
Following the opening reception, the exhibit will be on display until August 26.
