Every two years, the Rothko Chapel goes on a quest to honor leaders who share the spirit of the late Archbishop Óscar Romero of San Salvador. The visionary has long been recognized for his tireless efforts to fight against violence, poverty and social injustice. Earlier this year, Pope Francis declared Romero a martyr and he was beatified in El Salvador on May 23.

With this development, the Rothko Chapel’s 2015 Óscar Romero Award gains further significance. Beatification is the final step in the path to sainthood, and the recent celebration of Romero’s life and legacy are a powerful reminder of what the awards represent.

This year’s honorees are Miriam Miranda and Berta Cáceres, both Afro-Caribbean and indigenous rights activists in Honduras. They will each receive a $20,000 gift in recognition of their courageous, grassroots human rights advocacy.
