“Goddess” is an exhibition that explores the variety of ways that the divine feminine can be interpreted and the notion that we also have the strength of the gods within us. The show is comprised of two parts: a solo exhibition of the work of Tra` Slaughter and a group exhibition curated by Tra` Slaughter. The group exhibition will showcase work by artists from Houston, Austin, Dallas, and NYC who have each created work expressing their interpretation of the word “Goddess.” Figurative, abstract, sculpture, assemblage, and many more styles will be represented in the exhibition.

In his solo exhibition, Tra` will be presenting works that focus on individual Goddesses. Each piece will represent a chosen goddess created in Slaughter’s beauty-meets-grotesque style. Exaggerated features such as the eyes and mouth are used to express the true emotions of the subject of each painting. Inner body parts are exposed - bones, organs and private parts are all made visible, signifying the vulnerability of each subject. Exposing every aspect of themselves to the viewer is both an expression of vulnerability and strength. This also creates a strong connection between the mythological goddesses and human women alluding to the notion that we also have the strength of the gods within us. It takes strength to allow oneself to reveal everything about oneself in such a bold presentation.

Following the opening reception, the exhibit will be on display until April 8.
