Luca and Gustav are two young Italians who have witnessed the exodus of many of their Italian friends to other parts of Europe. Gustav is convinced the time has come for them to go abroad too, but Luca persuades him there are many good reasons to stay. The couple spends six months on a quixotic journey across their boot-shaped land in an old Fiat 500, attempting to understand Italy's power to make people abroad dream.
