Julep hosts an oyster shucking contest, with a mix of industry professionals and customers participating. The person who shucks a box of 24 oysters the fastest will win a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle 20 year that will be delivered to their house by an unaffiliated private bourbon collector.
The spectators also have a chance for some whiskey. All guests who accurately predict the last shucker standing will split a bottle of Van Winkle Family 10 year to be consumed inside the bar.
A fierce group of industry professionals are competing for the Pappy 20, including Julep's own Adam Garcia, Underbelly chef Chris Shepherd, Seth Siegel-Gardner of The Pass and Provisions, Morgan Weber of Revival Market and Coltivare, Kenten Marin of Holley's, Eric Laird of Liberty Kitchen and Bar, Philippe Gaston of Kata Robata and more. The chefs compete against each other, as do the customer participants, and the fastest competitors in each category will compete in the finals for the bottle.
Wellfleet Oyster's national sales associate Dan Roy is flying to Houston from Massachusetts to judge the contest, along with Julep owner Alba Huerta and Paulie's/Camerata owner Paul Petronella.
Customers age 21 and older interested in participating in the oyster shucking contest should talk to Alba Huerta at Julep or email her at alba@julephouston.com.
