Nicole Longnecker Gallery presents two concurrent exhibitions: Constructed Lore, featuring the work of Casey Arguelles Gregory and Mimi Kato; and Meditations, featuring the work of Cara Barer.
Kato's and Gregory's divergent media and aesthetics find common ground in their connection to narrative. Constructed Lore features Kato's large-scale photographs and Gregory's heavily impastoed canvases. Kato casts herself in many roles in her highly stylized compositions. She references Japanese woodblock printing with a heavy dose of humor and singular storytelling. Providing a visual contrast are Gregory's colorful paintings, which investigate the structure of myth. These canvases are emblazoned with heavily loaded words such as "hero" or "liberty." The texts are then alternately buried or revealed through frosting-like layers of paint.
Meditations features the photographs of Cara Barer, which are primarily a documentation of a physical evolution. The artist attempts to blur the line between objects, sculpture and photography.
The opening reception is on March 29, 5-8 p.m., preceded by a FotoFest 2014 preview and artist talk on March 27, 5-7:30 p.m. On view through April 26.
