As part of Houston Downtown Management District's Market Square Park Series, Musiqa features works for various combinations of saxophone quartet and percussion quartet. The program features New York Counterpoint by the seminal American composer Steve Reich, as well as works by other cutting-edge North American composers, including Dark Full Ride by Bang On a Can co-founder Julia Wolfe.
One highlight is a world premiere of a new work for tenor saxophone and percussion by Charles Halka, Musiqa's first resident composer intern.
"Step Out Of the Box" is the first concert of Musiqa's 2014-15 major concert series.
Joining on this program are saxophonists Dan Gelok, Johnny Salinas, James Sterling and Zach Woolhouse, and percussionists Craig Hauschildt, Brandon Bell, Luke Hubley and Michael Stubbart.
The brass ensemble for the 6:30 p.m. prelude concert comprises trumpeters Joshua Wiggins and Russel Haehl; Stephen Wadenpfuhl and Aaron Griffin on French horn; and trombonists J.D. Davis and Ben Nobles. The main concert will begin at 7:30 p.m.
