Edinburgh Connection is a collaborative exhibition between Anton Christian and Al Souza. The two first met as participants in the Edinburgh International Festival in Scotland in 1973. Since that time, they have traveled to each other's home countries many times. They have also organized a number of exhibitions of each other's work in the United States and in Europe. Remarkably, this is their first exhibition together.
These two bodies of work are a juxtaposition of two sensibilities. Souza's works incorporate the edges of pages from old books — the gilding, marbling and spines — presented in old wooden and metal boxes. Along with paint and various drawing materials, Christian's works collage those parts that Al choose not to use — the engravings, marbled pages and unprinted pages with handwriting on them — from the very same books. Neither knew what the other was doing until all the works were completed.
On view through May 31.
