MFAH Writers Workshop "Sex, Gender, Desire: Exploring Queer Identity through Poetry and Art"

eventdetail
Museum of Fine Arts, Houston

This daylong writing workshop uses poetry and visual art to explore LGBTQ (lesbian-gay-bisexual-transsexual-questioning) identity. Throughout the day, poet Scott Wiggerman leads discussions and writing exercises on queer myths, queer differences and queer desire. Along the way, the class reads poems by seminal LGBTQ American poets, including Gloria Anzaldúa, Frank Bidart, Mark Doty, Judy Grahn, Joy Harjo, June Jordan, Tim Trace Peterson, Muriel Rukeyser and Reginald Shepherd.

In addition, a brief discussion-based tour of specific works of art in the museum, such as Henry Fuseli's The Dismission of Adam and Eve from Paradise, leads to further discoveries about sex and gender — and serves as a launching pad to writing about art. The workshop also reviews leading models of LGBTQ sexual identity and concludes with a Q&A.
