This symposium is designed to broadly contextualize the landmark exhibition For a New World to Come: Experiments in Japanese Art and Photography, 1968–1979 by focusing on the year 1968, a year of intense changes in politics, culture and art around the world. Speakers connect major international cities — Houston, Tokyo, New York, Buenos Aires and others — through discussions of counter culture movements in art and architecture whose effects forever changed the course of artistic practice.
