At The Menninger Clinic’s Annual Luncheon, former NFL player Ryan Leaf will share how his time in prison served as the catalyst to begin his road to recovery and ultimately make it his mission to use his story to reach someone in need.
Leaf, once a college football standout, Heisman Trophy finalist, and second overall pick in the 1998 NFL Draft, was on the road to professional football stardom until struggles with mental illness and addiction changed that trajectory. After leaving the professional sports world, Leaf was known for his drug use and interactions with law enforcement that eventually led to a prison sentence.
The luncheon will also honor Archway Academy, a nonprofit school that provides a sober learning environment for teens in recovery. Funds raised from the luncheon will support the establishment of the new Center for Addiction Medicine and Recovery at The Menninger Clinic.
