Lecture: A Collector's Thoughts on Buddhist Texts and Ritual Objects from Japan

eventdetail
Museum of Fine Arts, Houston

Exploring the significance of words in Buddhist practice, Words and Things features fragments of Buddhist sutras, or texts based on the life and teachings of the Buddha, from the 8th century written in gold and silver ink on decorated paper; an 8th-century miniature wooden pagoda; and ritual objects that include an extraordinary bamboo sutra cover, bronze sutra containers, clay and bronze reliquaries, a bronze vajra (stylized lightning bolt), and bronze finials for priests' staffs.

Professor Sylvan Barnet discusses the ongoing role that collecting has played in his life.

The lecture is followed by a reception to meet the speaker and an exhibition viewing.
