Adam Szymczyk, director of Switzerland's Kunsthalle Basel, is the fifth winner of this award, which was established in 2001 in honor of founding director Walter Hopps (1932 - 2005). The biennial prize recognizes curators in their early to mid-career who have made significant contributions to the field of contemporary art.
