Latin Wave 8 screening: Juan of the Dead

eventdetail
Outsider Pictures

The eighth edition of Latin Wave: New Films from Latin America takes place May 2–5, with a group of new films premiering at the MFAH.

Zombies have overtaken the streets of Cuba's capital city and Juan doesn't quite believe the newscasts that they are dissidents sent by the American government. This hilarious and totally unexpected Cuban comedy blends humor, horror, zombie lore and the idiosyncrasies of being an isolated Communist outpost in the Caribbean.

When friends Juan and Lazaro happen to spot (and slay) a zombie, they are nonchalant about the episode. But when they realize that this is not a one-off anomaly and that the zombies just keep coming, they decide to turn a profit and set up shop as professional zombie slayers. At once affectionate and utterly irreverent, Alejandro Brugués' follow-up to Personal Belongings depicts a Havana where zombies are just one more peculiar aspect of life in a place already unlike anywhere else in the world.
