Latin Wave 8 screening: After Lucia

eventdetail

The eighth edition of Latin Wave: New Films from Latin America takes place May 2–5, with a group of new films premiering at the MFAH.

After her mother Lucía dies, teenager Ale (Tessa Ia) leaves the familiarity of Puerto Vallarta to accompany her father Roberto (Hernán Mendoza) for a new start in Mexico City. As Roberto immerses himself in opening his new restaurant, Ale settles in at a posh new school. She quickly makes friends, but a cell phone recording of her and a boy in her class goes viral, and she becomes the target of cruel and nasty harassment.

Mexican writer-director Michel Franco's second feature is an acute and timely portrayal of bullying. Well scripted and brilliantly acted, Franco is relentless in his depiction of the brutality that young people are capable of unleashing, providing a reflection on the decadence in the modern world.
